A planned meeting between Government officials and the leadership of the Technical University Senior Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) to resolve the ongoing strike action by the latter is expected to take off today.
The meeting is expected to find an amicable solution to the concerns of the striking senior administrators who have for some time now been knocking at the doors of the Government to do the needful.
The two parties have been knocking horns over the base pay of the senior administrators in line with their new status as university staff and not polytechnic staff.
TUSAAG on Wednesday, January 1, 2020, served notice to embark on an indefinite strike effective Wednesday, January 8, 2020, over government’s failure to pay all allowances due them.
The statement, a copy of which was served on the National Labour Commission (NLC), in part said the action of the striking senior administrators was to register their displeasure with the government following a ruling by the NLC.
According to them, failure by the government to comply with the ruling of the NLC has eroded the goodwill that the leadership of the Union showed during their deliberations.
“The government’s action of not complying with the ruling of the NLC has eroded the utmost good faith and goodwill that the leadership of TUSAAG exhibited during the discussions between TUSAAG and Government Team when the former withdrew its services”, the statement in part read.
On October 18, 2019, TUSAAG declared an indefinite strike due to government’s failure to address their concerns. Key amongst these is their base pay in line with their new status as university staff and not polytechnic staff.
However, on November 4, 2019, TUSAAG reviewed its stance to call off their strike after a meeting with the NLC and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).
According to them, government was deliberately dragging its feet in migrating them onto the public universities’ salary structure, noting that it is treating “Technical Universities as second fiddle within the public universities system”.
It remains to be seen whether the outcome of Wednesday’s meeting between the two parties will make TUSAAG will review its stance a second time.
