The Ghana National Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU) has peacefully elected and sworn-in new executives to take over the affairs of commercial transport services in the country. This was at the just-ended national congress of the Union held at Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
The election was finally held after the National Executive Committee of the Union (NEC) unanimously suspended the former chairman, Kwame Kuma over financial improprieties and misconduct against members of the Union.
A statement cited by ghananewsonline.com.gh and signed by the Regional Labour Officer in the Ashanti Region, Alexander Awotwi, and copied to the General Secretary of the GPRTU confirmed the results of the elections with the National chairman and Vice-chairman being elected unopposed.

According to the statement, the elected National Chairman and Vice-chairman, Nana Nimako Bresiama and Emmanuel Nii Ankrah were overwhelmingly elected with majority votes of 1189 and 1626 respectively, which represents more than the 20 percent of valid nomination votes needed to declare a winner.
Per Article 13 section (1) of the GPRTU constitution, candidates in an election are expected to garner 20 percent of the total valid nomination to be eligible to stand for elections.
But, based upon the 1725 nomination forms received, none received the above percentage to contest both the chairman and his vice during the elections.
The statement explained that the 2nd Trusteeship oversaw 2 nominees, namely, Nana Asare and Oscar Appiah obtaining the 20 percent and therefore members must cast their votes. It however indicated that Oscar Appiah stepped down making way for Nana Asare to contest unopposed.

Godfred Abubire – General Secretary
Isaac Essay – Deputy Secretary (Admin)
Richard Amankwaa – Deputy General Secretary (operations)
Jacob Odae – 1st Trustee
The statement further noted that the elections were held in a peaceful, free and fair manner and declaration of results by the labour officer was accepted in good faith by all contestants.
