The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (GA-REGSEC) has asked all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Region to collaborate with Police Commanders in their various jurisdictions to Police funerals.

They are to ensure that all funeral activities are held in open-air spaces and do not exceed two hours.

This is just one of many measures that the REGSEC is directing for MMDAs to take to ensure adherence to public safety protocols.

A statement signed by Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr. Henry Quartey directed the MMDAs to rope in other security apparatuses at their disposal as well.

What this means is that people who have lost loved ones will now have no more than two hours to perform funeral rites for them.

The measure is a desperate one that the REGSEC has been constrained to adopt as a way of fighting a second wave of the deadly coronavirus disease.

The Indian variant of the viruses, which is more contagious than its predecessors is spiralling infections in the country at an alarming rate.

According to official statistics, there have been 108,226 infections so far with 874 deaths. But these figures are up for doubts in the estimation of many people who do not trust the testing regime in the country.

The Greater Accra regional Minister has also directed all Security Councils of the various district Assemblies to institute a regime of routine checks at public places such as schools and lorry stations to ensure COVID-19 protocol compliance.

“MMDAs should also ensure that individuals or groups of persons who breach these protocols are arrested, fined, or prosecuted according to the law to serve as deterrence to others,” the statement said.

The Minister directed all MMDAs to also reactivate District Public Health Emergency Committees and start educational campaigns on the COVID-19.
