Greening Ghana Project: CCLG-Africa Commends Ministry of Lands

The Climate Communication and Local Governance – Africa, a civil society platform of journalists, communicators and seasoned local government practitioners has commended the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources for leading the charge in the Greening Ghana project aimed at planting some 5 million trees to enrich the forest cover of Ghana while mitigating the effects of climate change on the environment.

The group which is made up of media practitioners, climate change and local governance communicators also commended other stakeholders, including other state institutions and non-state actors such as religious bodies and traditional authorities as well as private institutions and individuals which are participating in the tree planting exercise.

The commendations by the group was contained in a press release signed by its President, Kofi Don Agor, as part of the celebration of the World Environment Day which is marked on the 5th of June every year.

The theme for this year’s celebration which is “Ecosystem Restoration”, is to mark the launch of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

According to the release, the world would be poorer if it does not cease the opportunity now to create the needed awareness on the emerging issues that militate against a sustainable environment for human existence.

OBSERVATION OF THE WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

On the occasion of World Environment Day (WED) which is observed annually on the 5th of June, the Climate Change and Local Governance Africa wishes to encourage Ghanaians and the rest of the world to participate in the activities marking this period.

The theme for this year is “Ecosystem Restoration”. The World Environment Day was officially established in 1974 by the United Nations (UN) to encourage the awareness of actions and inaction to protect the environment.

This year’s celebration which is to mark the launch of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, serves as an opportunity to create awareness on emerging issues on the environment: pollution on marine activities; pollution caused by activities due to the overpopulation of humanity; and global warming to sustainable consumption.

The environment plays a vital role in living healthy as humans and our existence on planet earth, there is the need for us as humans to protect our surrounding and the environment. The climate emergency has made it even clearer that we need to protect our environment.

The CCLG-Africa takes the opportunity to commend all Government Institutions, religious bodies and traditional authorities, non-state actors and individuals who in divers ways have played major roles in planting trees and continue to plant in contribution to greening the environment.

Once again, CCLG-Africa encourages institutions and individuals to cultivate the habit of growing seedlings, planting trees in the home and in the local communities to improve aforestation and combat climate change.
