A group aimed at championing the interests of inhabitants of former “Western Togoland” territory – Concerned Citizens of Western Togoland (CCWT) have called for a separation of the region from Ghana.
According to the group, inhabitants of the former Western Togoland, which is now divided into; Volta, Oti, Northern, North-Eastern, and Upper East Regions have been treated unfairly by the Ghanaian government hence their push for a sovereign state.
In a press statement released on Friday, signed by the group’s spokesperson, Daniel Yevugah, and copied to ghananewsonline.com.gh, he mentioned that persons living within the said region have being pushed into “second class citizenry” status due to neglect by government.
“We have been peaceable 63 years under extreme subjugation in an atmosphere of coercion, suppression… in addition to repressions into second class citizenry as always being said by the leaders of Gold Coasters”
The CCWT noted that, certain documents needed to prove the marriage between the then Western Togoland and Ghana is non-existent raising questions about the appropriateness and legitimacy of the Union.
They therefore called on members of Parliament within the region to push for sovereignty for the territory so “the Western Togolander’s can form their own parliament and government”.
