Chaos erupted at the Wa Magistrate Court on Wednesday, August 21, when an agitated mob stormed the premises, demanding justice for the murder of Alhaji Mutala Mahama, whose throat was brutally slit at his residence in Wa on April 11, 2024.

Tensions have been high in the community since the discovery of Mahama’s body, with residents calling for swift justice and transparency in the ongoing investigation. Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the heinous crime.

On the day of the incident, a large crowd gathered at the court, expecting the formal charging of the suspects. However, events took an unexpected turn when the presiding judge abruptly exited the courtroom without explanation, leaving the crowd confused and increasingly agitated.

Frustration and anger quickly spread among the crowd, who felt betrayed by the court’s actions. In their outrage, they began to march towards the Upper West Regional Police Command, located just a few meters away from the court.

In response, police officers fired several warning shots in an attempt to disperse the approaching crowd. Despite the gunfire and the arrest of one individual, the mob refused to back down, maintaining their presence near the police station.

Kayum Hussein Tendana, the spokesperson for the deceased’s family, condemned the authorities for their handling of the case. He also accused the suspects of being involved in other unsolved killings in the Wa area, urging affected families to remain vigilant and demanding that the police expedite the legal process.
