Hands Off Our Hotels Demo: Central Region is next – Ablakwa hints
“The demonstrations may continue if we don’t hear from President Akufo-Addo in the next few hours after the demonstration saying that they are backing off this transaction,” he stated.
Convener of the ‘Hands Off Our Hotels’ demonstration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has hinted that the protest will be extended to other regions if President Akufo-Addo fails to respond to their petition.
According to the North Tongu legislator, President Akufo-Addo must take action to halt the sale of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) hotels.
Speaking during the ‘Hands Off Our Hotels’ demonstration in Accra on Tuesday, June 18, Mr Ablakwa noted that the protest would be repeated in the Central Region, which houses some major state hotels, if no positive response is received from the president.
“The demonstrations may continue if we don’t hear from President Akufo-Addo in the next few hours after the demonstration saying that they are backing off this transaction,” he stated.
“We may go to the Central Region, where very iconic hotels like Ridge Royal and Elmina Resort are, and then remember that Busia Lodge and Trust Lodge are under attack”.
The protesters hit the streets of Accra today to kick against the sale of state-owned hotels.
The protesters are opposing the sale of Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) hotels to Rock City Hotel Limited, owned by Food and Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong.
The hotels in question are Labadi Beach Hotel, La Palm Royal Beach Resort, Elmina Beach Resort, Ridge Royal Hotel, Busua Beach Resort, and Trust Lodge Hotel.
They gathered at the La Palm Royal Beach Resort along the Accra-Tema beach road on Tuesday, June 18, to echo their sentiments in the protest, dubbed ‘Hands off our hotels’ demonstration.
The demonstrators matched to the Christ the King Parish to hand over a petition to government officials from the Jubilee House.
The messages on the placards include, “Bryan focus on food prices”, “Save pensions”, “Labadi should buy Rock City”, and “Pensioners deserve better”.
