Tamale South MP, Haruna Iddrisu, has issued a firm warning, declaring that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is poised to assume the Parliamentary Majority by Wednesday (16 October).

Iddrisu asserted that the NDC will invoke Article 97 of the 1992 Constitution during the next parliamentary sitting on Tuesday (15 October) to secure their majority.

The former Minority Leader insists that several Members of Parliament who have filed as independent candidates in the 2024 elections are disqualified from retaining their seats.

“If an MP on a political party ticket like NPP decides to run as an independent candidate, that member ceases to become a parliamentarian. The same applies if an NDC MP switches to contest as an independent,” Iddrisu said during a campaign event in the Tamale North constituency for Alhassan Suhuyini.

Iddrisu stressed that this action would put Parliament through a “major constitutional test,” ensuring that the NDC moves from Minority to Majority status.

He assured NDC supporters that their claim is constitutionally sound, urging them to prepare for a significant shift in the parliamentary landscape.

The development comes after MP for Agona West Cynthia Morrison broke ranks from the Majority Caucus to contest as independent candidate.

Her decision is being challenged in court.
