“Hell Will Break Loose” If Current VC Is Reappointed – UHAS Staff Protest

Some concerned stakeholders of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) have petitioned the Chairman of the Council of the institution, Justice Victor J.M Dotse, to stop the move to reappoint Prof. John Owusu Gyapong as Vice Chancellor (VC).

According to the group, in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Council, sighted by ghananewsonline.com.gh, the current VC has under-performed in his role, hence a renewal of his appointment will be an action in bad faith.

“We wish to state in no certain terms that the Council has exercised bad judgment (in considering the VC’s re-election). We do not know the basis or criteria used to take this line of action but the generality of staff and faculty of UHAS see the VC and the situation at UHAS differently.”

These concerned staff also alleged that the VC has abused his power to amass wealth and improperly recruit “unqualified” persons for positions based on affiliation.

“The VC, Prof John Owusu Gyapong, since his arrival has demonstrated through his actions and words that he took up the appointment for one reason only, which is to enrich himself, family and cronies and to create an empire to perpetuate his rule”

“Within weeks of arrival, he appointed [persons] who had no prior university experience and got them appointed as full or associate professors only on the account of research publication records. He then went ahead and made them members of the Appointment and Promotions Board contrary to the provisions of UHAS statutes,” they alleged.

They cited various instances of power abuse including the wrongful removal of the Professor in active service as Dean of School of Nursing and Midwifery and replacing her with a retired professor, as reasons to prevent the reappointment of Prof. John Owusu Gyapong as VC of the institution.

The group warned that “from all indications at the moment, renewal of the appointment of the VC will bring chaos at UHAS as the university community is already preparing to explode”

They therefore urged the UHAS council, led by Justice Victor J.M Dotse, “to open up the position of VC for application before hell breaks loose at UHAS”.
