In a heartwarming tale of perseverance and determination, a Ghanaian graduate has celebrated his achievement of obtaining a master’s degree in Norway. The journey of Abednego Akwasi Asante Asiedu has been marked by resilience and the unwavering pursuit of education, despite facing numerous rejections and life’s challenges.
After completing junior high school in 2002, Abednego faced financial constraints that led to a nearly decade-long hiatus from education. Nevertheless, his dreams of education never waned. He embarked on a journey of self-improvement, studying apprenticeship as an auto electrician and taking on various jobs in Accra to support himself.
“After completing junior high school in 2002 at Apradan village, circumstances led me to drop out of school for almost ten years. I had several offers from some notable Senior High Schools to further my studies at that level, but my family’s economy couldn’t support such a dream. However, my dreams of education never faded away. I refused to let this setback define me or hinder my aspirations for a brighter future. I went to study apprenticeship as an auto electrician in Nkawkaw, and after two years of apprenticeship, in 2006, I travelled to Accra for a new challenge in pursuing my dream. I did all kinds of jobs, including carpentry, masonry labour, shoe making, and all the other kinds of jobs hustlers do for survival within Accra,” he posted on his social media handles.

“With a deep desire to pursue higher education, I embarked on a challenging journey. Determined to overcome the odds stacked against me, I ventured into the unknown and decided to travel abroad for a master’s degree. My destination was Norway, a developed country that offered endless possibilities for growth and academic excellence.”

“I am immensely proud to be the first person in the third generation of my family to graduate with a master’s degree. This achievement holds a significant meaning for me, as it represents not only my personal growth and dedication but also the progress my family has made over the past years.”
“Coming from a family where higher education was not readily accessible, I have always been aware of the importance of education and its ability to transform lives. My grandparents, who grew up in a time when education was a luxury, were unable to pursue their dreams of obtaining a college degree. They had to prioritise providing for their families and ensuring their children had a better life than they did.”
As Abednego prepares to return to Ghana, he carries with him not only a master’s degree but also the stories of his struggles and triumphs. He hopes to inspire others, especially young minds facing similar challenges, to persevere and never give up on their dreams.
He expresses immense gratitude to all those who supported him on this remarkable journey, especially his family, friends, and the educational institutions in Ghana and Norway.
