How ‘Democracy Goons’ Deceived Police
By that letter, the group requested the police to provide them with security and protection for the intended demonstration.
As the conversation over the ill-fated demonstration engineered by National Democratic Congress (NDC)-backed hooligans rages, The Inquirer investigations reveal that the protest was merely a plot to dribble the Ghana Police Service, provoke them and hope they would commit excesses in brutalities and result in a bad image for the Ghana Police Service and the country as a whole.
According to the fact sheet in the possession of The Inquirer, so blatant was the procedural errors the organisers of the demonstration committed, that on the first day, for instance, despite earlier arrangements with the Police, Democracy hub wanted to compel the Police to change the rules to suit their plot to cause traffic and disrupt economic activities.
Persistence would culminate in arrests or lawful responses and the organisers would push their propaganda machine into action, with the support of acquiescing segments of the media community and certain FM stations that had already pilloried the Police for attacking pregnant women and overaged persons and children.
But the suspects and unruly elements behind the plot would be exposed when after the arrests, they claimed in their defence that it was no longer the #Wetaya protest originally presented to the Police but that they were campaigning against galamsey – switching to a more favourable campaign and advocacy that would find compassion with the electorate.
Facts Of The Case:
The accused persons were part of a group of protesters. On 9th July 2024, the Police service received a notice from a group known as “Democracy Hub,” informing them of their intention to hold a protest dubbed “Wetaya #ReoccupyJulorbihouse Demonstration.”
By that letter, the group requested the police to provide them with security and protection for the intended demonstration. The group indicated that they intended to protest at the Revolutionary Square, opposite the Jubilee House.
After several meetings with the Police, the group was advised by the Police to propose
an alternative venue as the chosen venue was considered a security zone and likely to affect public order and lead to violence or endanger public defence.
By an order of the High Court dated 18th September, 2024, the group was prohibited from embarking on the intended demonstration at the Revolutionary Square. The Police thus communicated to the convener of the group and suggested 7 different locations to be used for the protest in the interest of public order the group however, rejected the rejected the proposed venues and elected to protest at the 37 roundabout Police.
On 21 September 2024, the group embarked on their protest and gathered around the 37-round about insisting on proceeding to the revolutionary square. The Police mounted barricades around the 37 roundabouts in a bid to maintain security and order. The barricades restrained the demonstrators from proceeding to the Revolutionary Square.
The demonstration suddenly turned chaotic as the accused persons resorted to blocking the major roads with stones and vehicles delaying access at the roundabout. This caused
serious traffic within the Liberation Road, the El walk stadium, the Kawukudi road, and its environs.
This caused significant traffic, delay, inconvenience, and annoyance for commuters. The accused persons also pulled down billboards and burnt electoral posters and flags of political parties. Again, the suspects forcefully pushed down the police barricade that was used to secure the area, obstructing the effort of the police to maintain peace and
security.
That plot succeeding, the NDC and its allies would be inflating the peccadilloes of the Police and capitalise on that as a propaganda weapon into the remaining two months of the election calendar, to play a victim and poke the Police more and more to weaken them psychologically in building ammunition against the Police when turbulence hits the general elections.
That agenda attained, the opposition would stampede the Police when it attempts during the elections to sanitise the space at a time the demostrators had piled up cases against IGP Dampare and his boys, which will be that the Ghana Police Service had been bought by the New Patriotic Party (NDC) administration to spread terror and stampede the leading opposition party, the NDC.
Two months into the general elections, The Inquirer was told by intel experts that the NDC would be slowing down on conventional campaigns to focus on Police peccadilloes – weakening the intelligence and state security systems and play victim to victory.
Below is a copy of the document that has exposed the NDC goons and the #Wetaya organisers who deliberately forced the Police to intervene and create the impression that protesters had been brutalised.
