I have streamlined Ghana’s Agric Sector by easing farming – Afriyie Akoto

According to him, ”the highest amount of smuggling occurred in 2019” but ”it has reduced since we took that action”.

Minister for Agriculture, Hon. Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has touted his achievements since his appointment by the President of Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to head the agriculture sector.

The Minister, in an exclusive interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s morning show ”Kokrokoo”, disclosed that there has been significant transformative works done by him and his Ministry to streamline the agriculture sector by easing farming in the country as well as ensuring food security.

He revealed to host Kwami Sefa Kayi that one of the major things achieved under his leadership is his efforts in dealing with fertilizer smuggling.

According to him, ”the highest amount of smuggling occurred in 2019” but ”it has reduced since we took that action”.

Although admitting the smuggling hasn’t been completely eliminated, he however asserted that smuggling which was a great challenge to the sector has ”reduced drastically. We have an organization called the International Fertilizer Corporation whose headquarters is in Abidjan. They monitor these things for us and advise us on how to deal with the smuggling. According to their data, in the last two years, the smuggling has significantly minimized”.

The Minister also detailed numerous other interventions he has put in place to help farmers in the various fields of agriculture, from crop farming to livestock farming.

He strongly believed ”there has been total transformation…The farmers will attest to this. They have benefited hugely from the Akufo-Addo government’s interventions”.
