Presidential candidate Hassan Ayariga of the All People’s Congress (APC) unveiled a bold economic vision on October 22, 2024, with a key focus on radically increasing the minimum wage.

Addressing the Ghana Union of Traders Associations (GUTA), Ayariga promised to raise the current minimum daily wage from 18 cedis to 300 cedis, a nearly 16-fold increase. This hike aims to alleviate the financial struggles faced by Ghanaian workers amid rising living costs.

Ayariga criticized the existing system, claiming it is ineffective and disadvantages Ghanaians.

He also emphasized the importance of shifting the mindset of the population, asserting that it is up to Ghanaians to take responsibility for developing their own nation.

Ayariga stressed the need for transparency in government and prioritizing the interests of Ghanaian citizens and businesses.

Among his other policy initiatives, he proposed creating a national data system, implementing a comprehensive national development plan, and introducing an “economic lockdown” designed to boost local productivity.

Additionally, he pledged to simplify the tax system by reducing the number of taxes from 32 to 5 and stabilize the Ghanaian cedi.

The presidential candidate also plans to switch to a two-week salary payment cycle to combat corruption and introduce a free port policy with duty-free imports.

Ayariga’s policies are intended to tackle the economic struggles of Ghanaians, particularly local businesses burdened by high taxes, and to stimulate economic growth.
