Some members of the committee that probed the leaked tape on the scheme to remove the Inspector-General of Police have accused the chairman of the Committee Samuel Atta Akyea of abandoning committee meetings after they rejected some of the things he wanted in the report.

The Abuakwa South lawmaker claims some members of the committee do not agree with the recommendations and findings of the report despite the fact that all members except him signed the final report submitted to Parliament.

But a member of the committee who spoke on condition of anonymity following the chairman’s utterances in the wake of the report said “ He brought foreign material to the committee for incorporation. When the committee rejected his proposal, he left the committee and never returned to the committee.

“He never attended any of the more than 4 meeting that took place afterwards even though he was notified by the clerk to the committee on every occasion. His abdication was reported to the speaker by the committee” the member said.

The committee member further noted “even though the speaker summoned him to come and explain his behavior, he never showed up.

“The committee therefore continued without him as members present formed a quorum each time and agreed on all issues unanimously”.

Meanwhile, lawyers for the IGP say the chairman has proven them right about their fears that he has an agenda against the IGP.

“What happened has fully confirmed our nightmare that the chairman had his own agenda, he was on a frolic of his own way aside the remit of the committee and we have been vindicated,” lead Counsel for the IGP Professor Kwame Gyan told Joy News on Monday July 1,2024.

He further noted: “In the practice of the House, the Chair appointed by the Speaker has no original vote, the chairman’s vote is only a casting vote if there was a tie, and there wasn’t. So afar as we are concerned this report is a unanimous report. We know he’s part of the machinations by some unscrupulous elements who have an insatiable appetite to be IGP”.
