The presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has declared his new government will scrap the teacher licensure exams.
It was in response to a question he was asked during his interaction with Ghanaians on social media [Facebook] on Monday.
He was emphatic and did not mince words in stating that ”yes I will cancel the licensure exams” when I assume office in 2020.
Currently, the policy is that all newly trained diploma students from the various colleges of education who want to teach would be required to write the examination in their respective colleges or as may be directed by the NTC.
There was a wave of panic and confusion among the various teacher unions when the issue came to the fore last year, but the NTC insisted the move was to enforce discipline and eliminate non-performing teachers from the system, in accordance with the new Teachers Licencing Policy under the Education Act 778 (2008).
Per the new regime, no teacher could teach in any school in the country without the Teacher’s Licence.
But former President Mahama says what is needed is an improvement in the quality of teaching and learning at the various colleges of education.
Aside from that, improved final exams to assess and evaluate final year students would also be important, he added.
