The appeal was made during a private meeting on October 3 with leaders of the labour group, where the focus was on taking strong action against illegal mining.

Kwaku Ansah-Asare, a former director of the Ghana School of Law, has called on Organised Labour to ignore President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s request to cancel their planned nationwide strike over illegal mining.

The president had appealed to Organised Labour to reconsider their decision, emphasizing his commitment to addressing the issue of illegal mining, which has severely damaged the environment. The appeal was made during a private meeting on October 3 with leaders of the labour group, where the focus was on taking strong action against illegal mining.

Ansah-Asare, however, criticized the president for failing to fulfill his promise to tackle the issue. He pointed out that Akufo-Addo had once vowed to “put his presidency on the line” to fight the galamsey (illegal mining) crisis, but has not made any real progress or shown sincerity.

“On assumption of office, he said he would put his presidency on the line and said should he fail the galamsey fight, he would pay for it. We have asked him to apologise but he hasn’t apologised,” Ansah-Asare said.

With only eight weeks left in his tenure, Ansah-Asare suggested that President Akufo-Addo should have stepped aside for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to lead. “He shouldn’t be asking organised labour to do anything,” he remarked.

“He has not been sincere. You will not keep any promise that you give within the next eight weeks. So as far as I am concerned, organised labour should proceed with the timetable,” Ansah-Asare concluded.
