The former President John Dramani Mahama has categorically stated that he is not involved in any plot to stage a coup against the Akufo-Addo government as being alleged by the Bono regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Kwame Baffoe (Abronye DC).

In a statement, Mahama said the comment is false, describing it as “part of concocted stories” against him.

“HE John Dramani Mahama has not met with any group of people, let alone a terrorist group, to plot to stage a coup d’etat. President Mahama is very well known, both in Ghana and internationally, as a democrat and a strong believer in strengthening democracy not only in Ghana but across the continent of Africa. Therefore, any attempt to align or associate him with anti-democratic activities, acts of destabilisation, and abuse of human and other rights, cannot be true,” Joyce Bawah Mogtari, a special aide to Mahama said in a statement on Wednesday (16 February).

“This further clarification, despite reports of a police action against the said Abronye, is simply to re-emphasise President Mahama’s integrity and democratic credentials,” the statement added.

He appeared in court on Wednesday and was charged on two counts of publication of false news and offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace.

Abronye DC is expected to return to court on 9 March 2022.

He reported to the Accra Regional Police Command on Tuesday (15 February) after it extended an invitation to him to assist officers in an investigation.

Abronye DC is alleged to have claimed that the former president John Dramani Mahama is planning to stage a coup d’état in Ghana.

According to the police, a preliminary investigation has established that his claims against the former president are untrue and likely to occasion a breach of the peace.

“In view of this, he has been formally arrested and charged on two counts of publication of false news and offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace,” the Ghana Police Service said.
