The National Union of the General Transport, Petroleum and Chemical Workers’ Union of the TUC (GTPCWU), has called on the Ministry of Transport to ensure the safety of Staff of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and devoid it of any unlawful harassments from any group of persons or individuals.
The union says it is concerned about the workers of the DVLA because everything points to the fact that their lives are at risk in the performance of their duties and that it is time the relevant authorities act fast before the worst happens.
Addressing a press conference at the premises of the National Headquarters of the DVLA in Accra, the General Secretary of the union Fuseini Iddrisu noted that the constant political interference in the work of the staff of the DVLA can no longer be tolerated.
“Information reaching the National Secretariat of General Transport, Petroleum and Chemical Workers’ Union of TUC (Ghana) on Friday, 29th January 2021 indicates that a group calling itself Kandarhar Boys moved fo the office of DVLA in Tamale ordering the Local Management and the Workers to close down the office and leave the workplace otherwise they would burn the whole place down. This incident led to a temporary close down of DVLA Tamale on the same day.
“An official report was consequently made to the Regional Police Commander to intervene immediately for the safety of the office.
“As a National Union responsible for the workers of DVLA, we write to officially call on the Chief Executive of DVLA and the Sector Ministry to quickly intervene to ensure that the Workers of DVLA are given adequate protection in the performance of their duties,” the General Secretary noted.
The group recalled that “a politically motivated incident occurred in Winneba in 2017 resulting in the transfer of the Officer-in-Charge of DVLA, Winneba.”
They also alleged that “Political interferences are currently ongoing in Oda in the Eastern Region”.
The Union has thus called on workers of the DVLA to stand committed to their duties and responsibilities while steps are taken to address the issue.
