Every African language serves as a repository of history, culture, and values. The loss of a language leads to the erosion of these cultural elements, weakening the sense of identity and heritage. There is still time to preserve our local languages and prevent cultural extinction. African languages and cultures continue to face challenges, competing with internationally dominant cultures and experiencing assimilation, hybridization, and the threat of extinction.

“In Greater Accra, especially in Accra, where we live among friends from various parts of the country and abroad, we, the Ga people, need to support and expand the teaching and learning of our language for our children,” he stated.

He further explained the origins of the competition, stating, “To help propagate the Ga language, we met with the Adabraka Ga language teachers and initiated this quiz competition. It began on a good note with the involvement of the Ghana Education Service, teachers, parents, and students, who showed great interest. This motivated us to make it an annual event.”

The competition, which started with only six schools in Adabraka, has expanded significantly. The 2025 edition will involve 200 schools across Accra.

“As the competition grows, we are appealing to the Ga community, including those in the diaspora, to provide financial support to sustain this important initiative,” Nii Tetteh Adjiabeng II concluded.
