One confirmed dead, several others injured in clash between youth and police at Lamashegu

The angry youth of Lamashegu burnt tyres on the principal streets of Tamale Metropolis on Sunday, February 13, 2022, during the clash with the police.

The riot is said to have broken out after the police in the area chased a young man driving an unregistered vehicle into the Lamashe-Naa’s palace.

The young man is said to have sought solace at the palace to avoid being apprehended by security personnel, however, while running into the palace, the Police allegedly shot him, causing the disturbances.

The youth described the action of the police as disrespectful to the traditional authority, hence their agitation.

This led to several shots being fired from the officers while the youth also resorted to the pelting of stones.

Eventually, a water cannon and several rounds of tear gas were used to disperse the angry youth who later massed up and attacked the Lamashegu police station.

Subsequently, a group of soldiers joined forces with the police to bring the situation under control.
