Is Ghana a Poor or Rich Country?

election2024

When the President of Ghana Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo was campaigning in opposition five years ago, he wondered why Ghanaians are impoverished when the nation sits on abundant wealth. He promised to put more money in people’s pockets if they voted him to the presidency.

The people of Ghana bought into  his campaign rhetoric and overwhelmingly voted for him.
Four years through his presidency, the people of Ghana are wallowing in unprecedented hardships with poverty stricken to the core. Prices of goods and services are at cut throat levels.
Ghana’s economy is, and has been mismanaged with the help of lapses in the 1992 constitution which is managed and controlled by selfish parliamentarians who do not care about the development of the country but what will fill their pocket books.
Both sides of the Political divide compromises, only when it comes to think about what goes to them as benefits. For example, Ex.Gratia and quantum of salaries and allowances. Instead of them thinking about how to create and give jobs to the hundreds of thousands of employable trained nurses, university, polytechnic, and other category of graduates and skilled and none skilled labour forces, No!!!
Increasing their Ex.Gratia from 4billion to 6billion Cedis was a priority to them at the beginning of the 8th parliament, and lo and behold, that was approved with no abstentions from the 275 legislators, when right in the few months they will be going round the globe cup-in-hand to borrow from those countries that use their brains to save money. Are there any in our parliament that think about the hopelessness of the majority? I don’t think so.
Yes, Ghana is a rich country, much richer than our development partners per capita incomes considering our resources.
We are poor and remain poorer and poorer because our leaders after 1966 have been corrupt, and self centered. Until the dictatorial 1992 constitution is democratically reviewed to set severe punishment for economic saboteurs, we are not going anywhere, and will remain beggars forever.
