It’s a privilege for me to play for Ghana – Mohammed Kudus

“Growing up, I watched most of the legends playing for the team, and they served as motivation for me. Now, I’m in that position, so I see it as a responsibility to do things right, set an example, and be a good role model for the kids looking up to me.

West Ham United attacker, Mohammed Kudus, says it is a huge privilege and honour for him to play for his country.

After making his debut for the Black Stars of Ghana in 2019 against South Africa in the 2021 African Cup of Nations(AFCON) qualifiers, Kudus has become a key player for the four-time African champions.

In Ghana’s underwhelming 2023 AFCON campaign where the West Ham attacker made his debut in the continent’s top football tournament, the former Right to Dream academy product was one of Ghana’s standout players confirming his status as one of the key players for Ghana.

The 24-year-old midfielder scored two goals for the four-time AFCON champions despite their premature exit from the tournament.

Kudus has a strong background with the national team, having developed through the youth ranks before making his senior debut.

Reflecting on his journey with the team, Kudus described the chance to feature for his country as a huge privilege.

“It’s a huge privilege to represent our country of [nearly] 40 million people as one of the players for the Black Stars. It means so much to me,” he told NBC Sports.

“Growing up, I watched most of the legends playing for the team, and they served as motivation for me. Now, I’m in that position, so I see it as a responsibility to do things right, set an example, and be a good role model for the kids looking up to me.

“I want to show them that it’s possible to achieve even greater things and do better than what I’m doing right now,” he added.

After facing recent setbacks in major tournaments, Ghana has made a strong comeback, topping their 2026 World Cup qualifying group with 15 points after wins over Chad and Madagascar in the March internationals.

With his eyes set on achieving greater things for the senior national team, Kudus performance will be keen for the West African powerhouse as they seek to win their first international trophy since 1982.
