It’s unfortunate government’s solution to every problem in the country is Free SHS – Mahama
Former President John Dramani Mahama has declared his disapproval of the repeated emphasis on the impact of the Free Senior High School policy of the government by elements of the governing New Patriotic Party, ABC News can report.
The former President noted that the tendency for government officials to make mention of the implementation and impact of Free SHS anytime a section of the public express their reservations on an issue is disappointing and a ‘tragedy’.
From the request for roads, jobs, others, the former President, who is seeking re-election as flagbearer of the opposition NDC after he lost miserably in 2016, as some have described it, indicated that government has made it a constant to point to Free SHS as an alibi.
“And the tragedy is if you ask the New Patriotic Party (NPP) what are they doing about the road they will say free SHS. If you ask about the CHPS compound, they will say we have given you free SHS when you ask about jobs, they will say we have given you free SHS,” told market women on his tour of the Volta Region.
He bemoaned the poor state of projects he began during his first term in government suggesting that they have all been abandoned by the Akufo-Addo government and left to deteriorate.
The community day schools and roads are among a few projects the one-time President argued, have been neglected by the Akufo-Addo government.
“It is a pity because everything that we started has come to a standstill. I go round the country and most of the roads, where we left them on 7th January 2017, that is where the roads have ended. All the community based Secondary Schools, where we left them on 7th January 2017, that is where they have ended,” he observed.
Former President Mahama iterated, “All the projects have come to a standstill because the NDC left office. The Community secondary school has come to a standstill. All the road projects have come to a standstill. All the road projects have come to a standstill. All the road projects have come to a standstill.”
The Former President, whom some analysts suggest was kicked out of power because of the poor economic situation at the time, accused the Akufo-Addo government of underperforming.
He averred that the governing NPP pledged to do better but, in his opinion, people aren’t feeling the change they preached.
“You are selling oysters, shrimps and so many other things. Nobody needs to come and tell you that the economy is not doing well. Everybody selling something today can see that they making less sales than they used to do in the past and that is because times are hard. People came and told us that the money is there, that we were sitting on money but yet hungry.”
He quizzed, “Today the Finance Minister tells us that everyone knows that Ghana is broke. The NPP president in 2016 told us we are sitting on money but still hungry, so why is the Finance Minister saying Ghana is broke?”
