James Gunu Slams Bawumia’s Volta Region Tour, Calls It Hypocritical and Insulting
Prez Akufo-Addo Imposed You on the NPP, But He Can’t Impose You on Ghanaians: Why Bawumia Has No Business Touring the Volta Region.
In a strongly worded piece, Hon. James Gunu, the Volta Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress(NDC) , has strongly criticized Vice President Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia for his tour of the Volta Region.
Mr. Gunu contends that Bawumia’s presence in the region is not only hypocritical but also an insult to the people, given the vice president’s role in perpetuating policies that have caused significant harm to the region.
“If Bawumia really cares about the volta region, why did he instruct the then finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta to take out the volta region from the national budget?” Mr. Gunu asks.
He also raised concerns about the government’s handling of recent natural disasters in the region, notably the flooding caused by the Akosombo and Kpong dam spills. He accuses Bawumia of showing little empathy toward the affected communities, leaving many livelihoods destroyed without offering adequate support.

Prez Akufo-Addo Imposed You on the NPP, But He Can’t Impose You on Ghanaians: Why Bawumia Has No Business Touring the Volta Region.
Vice President Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia’s presence in the volta is an insult to the good people of the region, especially considering the role he played in worsening their plight. As the head of the so-called “solid” economic management team, Bawumia oversaw unprecedented economic hardship that hit the Volta region hard. If Bawumia really cares about the volta region, why did he instruct the then finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta to take out the volta region from the national budget?
Alhaji Bawumia’s silence in the face of discrimination has been deafening. When the then Energy Minister, NAPO, showed clear disdain for the region, Bawumia didn’t speak up—he rather rewarded him by choosing him as his running mate.
Additionally, when the Nana Addo-Bawumia led NPP government tried to wipe us off the earth in the catastrophic flooding from the Akosombo and Kpong dam spills, Bawumia offered no sympathy, he stood by while livelihoods were washed away.
To add insult to injury, the people of the Volta Region have long been labeled as foreigners “Togolese” by the NPP during voter registration efforts—yet, after enduring these injustices, Bawumia now has the audacity to ask for their votes. The truth is clear: he has no genuine interest in the welfare of the Volta people, and his defeat in the NPP primaries within the region speaks volumes. The Volta Region deserves better than this kind of political opportunism.
