The National Deputy Director of the Traders and Artisans Network (NDN), Bright Botchway, has indicated that John Mahama is the surest bet to win the 2024 elections and not Dr Bawumia, whom he described as a liar. He compared Bawumia to local slippers, while John Mahama is likened to Italian shoes.

On July 16, 2024, a discussion occurred in Accra during the popular political evening show “Simpieso” on Atinka FM, hosted by Owoahene Nana Acheampong. The show, renowned for its engaging debates and insights, had invited Mr Bright Botchway, the National Deputy Director for the Traders and Artisans Network under the National Youth Wing of the NDC, to discuss current political matters.

During the discussion, the host asked Mr Botchway about a recent statement by a former Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, suggesting that John Dramani Mahama should debate Dr Bawumia, the NPP presidential candidate.

Mr. Botchway firmly opposed this idea, arguing that John Mahama should not engage in a debate with Bawumia. Instead, he suggested that Bawumia should make himself available to the media for questioning, similar to how Mahama has been engaging with the media. This approach, he argued, would allow Ghanaians to judge the candidates based on their responses and policies.

Mr Botchway reiterated that Bawumia’s performance has been so lacklustre that he doesn’t deserve to share a platform with Mahama.

He pointed out that John Mahama possesses integrity, a proven track record, and significant achievements, which make him a credible leader. In contrast, Dr. Bawumia lacks credibility and is seeking a debate with Mahama to boost his own standing.

According to Botchway, the focus should be on individual policy proposals rather than debates, as this would provide a clearer picture of each candidate’s vision for Ghana.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Botchway made a striking analogy: “Comparing John Mahama and Bawumia is like comparing Italian shoes to local slippers.” This comparison underscored his belief that Bawumia is not in the same league as Mahama and should not be given the same platform. He reiterated that Ghanaians deserve to hear substantive policies from each candidate, rather than a debate that could be used to enhance Bawumia’s credibility artificially.
