Assin Central Member of Parliament (MP), Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has called on the government to persuade the Electoral Commission (EC) to postpone the date for the referendum on allowing political parties to partake in local level elections.
Reports suggest that education on the referendum is at all time low leading to fears that there will be low turnout during the polls that will be held on December 17, 2019.
It is also feared that the government which has been the main advocate for a YES vote will not gain the 75% needed for amendment of the Constitution.
Speaking on the referendum on Net 2 TV, as monitored by Angelfmonlinegh.com, Kennedy Agyapong proposed that the referendum be postponed.
The reason, he said, is to allow people to be well informed about the polls so they can vote YES.
“If they will listen to me, they should postpone the referendum to February so that we can have enough education on it…people don’t tend to take local level elections seriously, so we should insulate the referendum from the local level elections…,” he said.
He further proposed that there was a need to decouple the referendum from the local level elections as according to him, Ghanaians don’t take local level elections seriously.
“When we start campaigning and educating people on it very well, we will get more than the 40% turn out…,” he added.
