Mr. Joseph Appiagyei, the Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority in the Bono East Region, has refuted rumours circulating on social media that galamsey activities are responsible for the muddied water at the iconic Kintampo Waterfalls. Responding to a video trending online, which shows thick brown water flowing through the waterfalls, Mr. Appiagyei clarified in an interview with The High Street Journal that the video is an old clip, deliberately resurfaced to create mischief.

According to Mr. Appiagyei, the video was recorded during a period of road construction between Kintampo and Yeji, which had caused temporary disturbances to the waterfall’s water quality. However, he stressed that the road has since been tarred, and no such issues persist today. He assured the public that the Kintampo Waterfalls remains in good condition, and the claims circulating online are baseless.

Despite this assurance, a second video, allegedly shot on September 16, also shows slight traces of brown water at the falls, leading some to question whether the issue has resurfaced. Mr. Appiagyei explained that such discolouration is natural after heavy rainfall and is a temporary occurrence. He added that the water usually clears within three to four days.

The Kintampo Waterfalls is one of Ghana’s most popular tourist destinations, attracting visitors from across the country and beyond. Mr. Appiagyei urged the public not to be swayed by misleading information on social media and instead to verify the facts before drawing conclusions.

He encouraged Ghanaians and tourists alike to continue visiting the site, assuring them that the waterfall’s natural beauty and cleanliness will remain intact, barring any temporary disruptions caused by weather conditions.
