Kweku Darlington has said he sometimes performs for galamsey operators.

He made the startling revelation speaking to Nana Kwesi Bliss on Class Xtra (Class 91.3 FM).

Bliss had asked if the Kumasi-based singer-songwriter and rapper was open to performing at political events.

As Ghana goes to the polls on December 7, King Paluta has been seen singing his Aseda megahit in the company of Vice President and flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, while Olivetheboy performed at a townhall meeting by former President John Dramani Mahama of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Kweku Darlington categorically said yes.

“I’m an artiste, I’m a businessman, this is a job for me. If I honour invitations to perform at weddings and I take a fee [and] galamsey people call, I perform and take my money, what is wrong with going to perform for a political rally? It’s just bookings,” the Sika Aba Fie hitmaker said.

Bliss expressed shock at performing for galamsey operators.

“Oh I don’t joke with my money,” Kwaku Darlington responded.

Galamsey (illegal mining) has become a great concern to the Ghanaian public following the pollution of crucial water bodies such as the Tano and Pra rivers.

Recently, the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) cautioned residents in Cape Coast, Central Region, they would be experiencing a worsened challenge in water supply due to the silting of the Tano River caused by galamsey.

Kweku Darlington’s admission to performing for galamsey operators underlines one of the root causes of the menace, placing profit above responsibility to the environment.
