Despite the numerous developmental challenges that embattle La Dade Kotopon Municipal Assembly, the assembly has made a tremendous turn around in the last few years.
Addressing the press at ‘meet the press’ in Accra at the Assembly’s hall on Wednesday, November 13th, Hon. Solomon Kotey, Municipal Chief Executive said, the assembly has done a progressive work to improve the lives of residents of La.
The program forms part of the government’s effort to ensure that development communication plays an important role in the National Agenda.
Below are some areas he touched on:
EDUCATION
He said the assembly has provided mono desks to the various SHS within the Municipality as their effort towards sustaining free education policy. He added that the assembly has also completed construction of a 2-storey 12-unit classroom block at St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High School and similar projects are ongoing at La Presby Senior school, Labone Senior High School and Forces Senior High School.
PROJECTS AND RECENTLY AWARDED
Touching on the projects recently awarded, Hon. Kotey announced that the assembly has cut sod to begin the construction of the following projects;
Construction of 0.9m x 0.6m U-drain from Labone SHS to Boifio street and construction of block wall fencing at La Royal Cemetery.
He said the assembly is deemed for another sod cutting of the following projects; construction of 6 unit classroom block with ancillary facilities at association cluster of schools.
Construction of 0.90m U-drain from nativity to Kenam factory, storm drain, and construction of a 2-storey building, 4 bedroom bungalow for MCE at Labone.
AGRICULTURE AND INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT
As part of the government’s deliberate effort to create jobs, the “planting for food and jobs, “rearing for food and jobs and planting for export and rural development “, he said, the assembly has initiated some programmes where seventh-three (73) farmers registered under the policy.
Noting that, the assembly received eighty (80) cockerels under the rearing for food and jobs policy where were distributed to farmers who showed interest.
LIVELIHOOD EMPOWERMENT AGAINST POVERTY (LEAP)
In line with social protection programmes initiated by the government, the LEAP program enjoyed aimed at providing a basic and secure income for the most vulnerable household through cash transfers have been going on in the assembly.
Recently he said, the assembly has been able to three hundred and eleven vulnerable households within the municipality through an electronic payment system.
Adding that, on the mandatory 3% of the district assembly common fund; the assembly has also disbursed to the person’s with disability (PWD) fund as part of addressing issues related to vulnerability.
SANITATION
Being one of the major challenges confronting the assembly, Hon. Kotey said the assembly has launched sanitation days’ clean-ups dubbed “wonsaa La, Keoheawo mli” which means “Let’s clean La, get involved “which would kick start on Saturday, 16th November 2019 in the New Lakpanaa Electoral Area.
REVENUE AND EXPENDITURE PERFORMANCE
As of end of September in 2018, the assembly received a total of GH¢14,989,169.18 out of a total budget of GH¢20,100,000.00. The performance was 74%. The total internally generated funds (IGF) were GH¢6,669,320.27 while the amount received from the government of Ghana and donors was GH¢8,201,030.94 and GH¢25,817.97 respectively.
He said, the assembly as at the end of September 2019, had mobilized a total revenue of GH¢13,594,643.67; this includes GH¢7,172,926.17 from the central government, GH¢1,120,219.83 from donors and GH¢5,301,497.63 from IGF.
The Assembly’s total expenditure stood at GH¢15,580,393.51 at the end of last year and GH¢10,604,747.02 at the end of September 2019.
He urged the residents and businesses to honor their tax obligations in order to undertake more developmental projects within the assembly.
