Covid-19// In the midst of the global Coronavirus pandemic, hackers are taking advantage of the world’s vulnerable state, prying on individuals and industries who are quickly becoming victims of cybercrime. With many people forced to work from home, Zoom quickly became the app of choice to host meetings and connect with colleagues. In April 2020, Zoom recorded over 300 million daily meeting participants.
However, hackers saw this as a great opportunity, selling over 500,000 Zoom user accounts on the dark web forum. During the same month, Google blocked 18 million daily malware and phishing emails, all in relation to COVID-19.
Whilst many of us are scrambling to make sense of this confusing and devastating time, cybersecurity threats are on the rise, many of which we’re not even aware of. Phishing attacks tend to prey on people’s fears which is something very pertinent amongst a worldwide pandemic. Hackers have been thriving on providing fake healthcare links, false information on masks and PPE, and encouraging people to give up their personal details in response to COVID-19.
