The Ghana Union of Traders’ Association, GUTA, says it harbors no hatred against foreigners, especially Nigerians.
“All we want is for them to leave the retail space and there’ll be peace. We don’t want chaos. How how long should this continue when we have institutions to make this work.,” Vice President of GUTA, Patrick Osei Brogya told Kasapa 102.5 FM.
At least 600 shops belonging to foreign traders particularly Nigerians at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle have been locked up by members of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA).
This is the umpteenth time GUTA members had embarked on such an exercise in their quest to rid the Ghanaian market of foreign traders who are engaging in retail.
According to GUTA, government has failed to enforce Section 27 (1) of the GIPC Act, which bars foreigners from doing retail business.
Commenting on the fallout from the incursion by GUTA on Anopa Ksapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM, the Vice President, Osei Brogya indicated that what happened on Monday is a build up to the previous caution and advice in several of its press conferences held.
He adds:”Immigration must step in, following the closing of the shops. They should begin to probe those affected if they even have work/residential permit.”
“They don’t have any documentations backing their business. Anytime they transact business, its A4 sheets that they normally use; No receipts, No voucher.
“It’s regrettable to the extent that today Nigerians are suggesting to government to scrap that GIPC law. Their[government] children may not be in the retail business, but their family members may be in it; they need to rise up now.”
