Good evening and thank you for taking time off your busy schedule to be part of today’s briefing as I update you on the status of implementation of lighting Accra.
You would recall that, upon assuming office, I made a firm commitment to ensure that about 70% of streetlights in most of the major roads and streets in the region would be fixed and made fully operational within my first 50 days in office as my attention had been drawn to the darkness the city is engulfed in. This initiative is in line with H.E the President’s reset agenda to improve visibility and enhance security. To achieve this target, we engaged all 29 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and tasked them to identify these streets and highways which needed immediate attention and submit a workplan to fix them. Furthermore, a dedicated monitoring team was established at the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to oversee the progress and ensure efficiency.
Today March 25th, marks exactly 50days in office and I am pleased to report that significant progress has been made. In all, about 126 streets has been worked on, including some highways, town roads and community roads across all the 29 MMDAs in the region. I must mention that the Tema – Motorway and the Accra -Tema Beach Road which is of very much concern to the general public could not be lighted because of the on-going construction works.
Additionally, there is maintenance works on streetlights on portions on the N1(Tetteh Quarshie to kasoa), N6 (Achimota to Amasaman) and N4 (shiashie to oyibi) by the Ghana Highways Authority and the contractor is on site with works ongoing.

While the MMDAs were at their wits end and mobilizing resources to achieve the target and performance indicators given them, one challenge was clear. Throughout all the areas there were cases of streetlight cable theft. This theft cases severely hampered progress and is one major reason streetlights are mostly off. I must stress that the incidence of theft poses a major set-back for the sustainability of our streets remaining lighted. I wish to therefore passionately appeal to all citizens to be patriotic and safeguard public infrastructure. Anyone caught stealing these vital components will face severe consequences. We must all be on the look out and say something if we see something. I will ensure that, the Metropolitan, Municipal and District chief Executives who are the Chairpersons for the District Security Communittees, formulate modalities to track these miscreants upon assumption of office.
I wish to assure the public of my continued commitment to improve security and visibility in the region. I also want to use this opportunity to thank all stakeholders especially our media partners for the sustained campaign on my pledge to fix 70% of streetlights in the region in my first 50 days.
I sincerely express my gratitude to H.E the President and the Vice President for their support. Special commendation goes to the Ministry of Energy for their support in providing us with some streetlights.
To the MMDAs, I wish to commend all of you for the commitment and dedication for the past 50 days. As we set to go out and observe from some principal streets, let’s remember it is the hard work of our MMDAs that our streetlights are functioning. And to the contractors, who have worked hard day and night to ensure our streetlights are on, we are grateful.
Ladies and Gentlemen
To be able to sustain this progress, we have to begin the conversation among all agencies in the power sector to work on the modalities to release to the MMDAs their share of the 1% charged consumers for streetlights. This would augment the resources of the MMDAs to keep the lights on all the time.
I also wish to admonish advertisers who erect signages and posts on our road medians to seek the needed permits and support from the respective MMDAs in order not to disrupt or destroy the underground cables that supply power to the streetlights.
Thank you for your attention and I look forward to many more partnership in our quest to develop the Greater Accra Region.
