Local Government Minister vows to terminate contracts of nonperforming contractors
After a tour to the Central and Western regions, the minister is enraged at the lackadaisical approach contractors have put government contracts to.
Government through the Local Government and Rural Development Ministry says it is taking immediate steps to terminate contracts of non-performing contractors under the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Programme in some 35 municipalities across the country.
Local Government Minister, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, says the Ministry has observed that some contractors deliberately delay projects to secure extra funds from the government.
After a tour to the Central and Western regions, the minister is enraged at the lackadaisical approach contractors have put government contracts to.
He shared his observations with the media after the tour Thursday, August 22, 2024.
“I saw a lot of disappointing situations where timelines are not being met. There is every indication that when this project is needed, it will not be delivered. If all was well, there is no way we should come and prompt anybody to do their work. If by the time that this must be completed and handed over, you’ll be penalised for it by the ministry.
“Anybody who has access the work of us who reneges on the agreement on when they should be delivered, we will take legal steps to blacklist you. We’ll take no chance to that because logically what you’ll end up doing is, I’ve delayed therefore I’m doing variation and the State should pay me more money. That is not going to happen. In my ministry it is not going to happen.
“And when you are due, you don’t deliver it, you can’t come near our projects next time. That one we’ll reserve it as rights to sanitise the governance space. And we’ll do report to make sure that legally you’re off our ways because when you come, you cannot deliver, why should we give you chance next time?” he lamented.
