Joyce Bawah Mogtari, the aide to former President and the 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has disputed reports that John Dramani Mahama has promised to stabilise the cedi within 100 days when he is elected into office again.

She posited that the in-depth knowledge of the former President in economic affairs would not permit him to make such an unfeasible promise to the country.

Rather, she said, he outlined a comprehensive plan to stabilise the currency.

“Mr Mahama, with a deep understanding of the economic challenges confronting the country today, did not promise to stabilise the Ghana Cedi within 100 days. Instead, he laid out a comprehensive plan in his remarks at the 8th Ghana CEO Summit to address the challenges, demonstrating his grasp of the situation.”

“He also emphasised the need for fiscal discipline and responsible economic management to achieve currency stability. He highlighted measures such as pruning government expenditures, preventing waste and corruption, and boosting revenues by expanding the tax net.

“Additionally, he mentioned simplifying the VAT and streamlining its collection, abolishing the e-levy, and reducing some burdensome taxes on businesses and households.”

A section of the media reported that the former President promised to stabilize the cedi 100 days into office while delivering the keynote address at the 8th Ghana CEO Summit on Monday, May 27, 2024.
