Mahama fires back at Akufo-Addo: ‘Liars cannot enter heaven’ Over ‘Dumsor’ claims
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has strongly criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for remarks labeling his presidency as synonymous with the power outages known locally as “dumsor.”
During a speech on Monday, November 25, President Akufo-Addo referred to Mahama as a “failed president,” emphasizing that he was the only Ghanaian leader not re-elected for a second term. Akufo-Addo contended that while other past presidents are celebrated for significant achievements, Mahama’s tenure is remembered for persistent power supply challenges. He also dismissed the NDC’s proposal for a “24-hour economy,” questioning Mahama’s ability to manage such an initiative given his track record. “If he could not keep the lights on for 12 hours during his tenure as president, how can he sustain a 24-hour economy? Stop that lies,” the President stated.
In a swift response during his tour of the Western Region on Tuesday, Mahama rejected these accusations, maintaining that the power crisis had been resolved before he left office in 2017. He expressed disappointment in the President’s remarks, calling them untruthful and unbefitting of his status.
“I expect that when NPP is telling lies, they’ll leave it to the younger ones and the junior ones to do. But when the senior ones like Nana Akufo-Addo says that ‘dumsor’ was not solved before they came, I heard him say that if we could not keep the lights on, how can we run a 24-hour economy?” Mahama responded. He further added, “In 2016, ‘dumsor’ had been solved. Nobody’s lights went off in 2016, nobody had load shedding in 2016, that is on record.”
Citing a biblical reference, Mahama also argued that dishonesty would lead to divine punishment. “You know, liars cannot go to heaven and let me give you a Bible quotation, Proverbs Chapter 19:9. He said, those who bear false witness will not go unpunished, and the liars will be destroyed,” he declared.
The exchange highlights the deep political rivalry between the two leaders as the nation approaches the 2024 elections.
