John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has promised that his next administration will focus on completing abandoned hospitals and the Agenda 111 project to create employment opportunities for trainee nurses.

Speaking to a group of trainee nurses on Saturday, Mahama emphasized his commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure and addressing the challenges faced by healthcare professionals in Ghana. He underscored the importance of finishing these projects to ensure that healthcare facilities are both available and accessible to all Ghanaians.

Mahama explained that completing these hospitals would not only improve healthcare delivery but also generate much-needed jobs for trainee nurses and other healthcare workers. “We understand the difficulties trainee nurses face, which is why, during our time in government, we proposed replacing allowances with a student loan system to create more employment opportunities. The key issue is not the allowance but securing a job after graduation,” he said.

He criticized the current administration for failing to fulfill its promise of paying allowances, stating, “Someone promised to pay the allowances, but it turned out to be a false promise. Nurses are owed nearly 30 months of arrears, and some have left school without receiving their payments. Others may leave school soon without their allowances. However, what we focus on is creating jobs. The NDC is committed to employment, and we aim to create as many job opportunities as possible.”

Mahama further committed that if re-elected, he would complete the hospitals currently under construction and the Agenda 111 hospitals. “When I return to office, we will continue and finish the hospitals that have been abandoned by this government. We will also ensure the completion of the Agenda 111 hospitals to create additional spaces for employment when you graduate. This election is a choice between Ghana and the NPP,” he concluded.
