Mahama promises to revamp Tumu Cotton ginnery under private management
He says the Tumu Cotton ginnery which used to be functional and provided jobs for residents of the area has now collapsed, leaving many youth in the area unemployed.
The flag bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, is assuring residents of the Sissala West and East constituencies of the Upper West region that he will revamp the cotton industry to provide jobs for the youth of the area.
He says the Tumu Cotton ginnery which used to be functional and provided jobs for residents of the area has now collapsed, leaving many youth in the area unemployed.
According to Mahama, the factory was what provided cotton to the Juapong Textile Mill in the Volta region, which have all been shutdown with the result being a rising unemployment.
Speaking to residents of Golu and Tumu Sunday, October 13, 2024, the former President said he will fulfill the promise he made to them in 2020 by revamping the company to provide them jobs.
“In 2020 I told you that when I was a young boy and used to come here with my father, the Tumu Cotton industry was working. People were growing cotton and the ginnery was producing cotton for the Juapong Textiles Mill and people were earning money and so I said one of the things we want to revamp the cotton industry and the cotton farming in the Sissala East and West areas so that we can revive the Ghana cotton company ginnery,” he assured.
He, however, indicated that the company is going to be managed by the private sector for efficiency and more employment opportunities.
“But this time under private management not state management so that it can run more efficiently and provide employment to the young people here in Tumu to be able to also earn an income,” he added.
He urged the residents to vote the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) out for the hardship it has brought upon Ghanaians.
