Man, 22, gunned down by on-duty officer at Kasoa

A 22-year-old man has died after he was alleged to have been shot by a police officer in Ghana’s Central Regional town of Kasoa, officials say.

The deceased has been named as Musah Mohammed.

The Central Regional Police Command confirmed the incident occurred on Friday December 6, 2019 at about 12:30 midnight at JVC — a popular drinking spot in Kasoa.

The suspect, Corporal Samuel Boamah of the Rovers Unit at the Kasoa District Command and his colleague named as Lance Corporal Isifu Tahiru were at the spot to drink.

An altercation later broke out between the officers and some customers who had gathered at the place.

It is gathered that Lance Corporal Isifu Tahiru, who had his side arm loaded with 13 live ammunition decided to frighten the charged crowd by pulling out his weapon.

Corporal Boamah snatched the gun and shot at the deceased, a police report read.

The two officers have since been detained and are being interrogated on the matter.

“They have been detained and are being investigated for murder currently”, said DSP Irene Oppong, the Central Regional Police Spokesperson at a press briefing.

The body of the deceased according to the police spokesperson has been deposited at the police hospital for preservation and autopsy.
