Abdulai Mustapha, a 32-year old native of Daboya in the North Gonja District of the Savannah Region has been allegedly shot and killed by the police for stabbing and wounding a police officer, ABC News has gathered.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that a complaint was lodged at the Daboya Police station in the early hours of Tuesday claiming that the deceased, who stayed with his aged mother, had threatened to kill the mother.
Following the complaint, four unarmed Community police officers were detailed to the house of the deceased. However, upon their arrival, Abdulai Mustapha, who is alleged to be mentally unstable, refused to cooperate with the police personnel as he refused to offer explanations to his alleged conduct. Rather, Mustapha allegedly entered his room and returned with a cutlass and a knife.
According to the account, the deceased then pursued the officers until one of them, Tidoro Mohammed, fell to the ground. The community police officer was allegedly stabbed by the deceased before a police reinforcement team arrived at the scene. The reinforcement team, according to reports, shot and killed the deceased.
An eyewitness and the North Gonja District Coordinator of National Youth Employment Programme, Adam Yahaya told JoyNews that the reinforced team officers were initially unsuccessful in arresting the suspect after they had chased him a nearby bush for nearly two hours.
“While they were returning to the station, the suspect emerged and begun to attack them leading to the firing of shots of which hit him resulting in his death”, Mr. Yahya narrated.
Meanwhile, the wounded officer is said to be receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital in the Northern Region, the same facility the body of the deceased has been deposited. The Savannah Regional Police Command is however, yet to officially react to the incident.
