Phase 3 of Nationwide Market Disinfection Excercise begins

The third phase of the nationwide markets disinfection exercise of markets across the country commenced in the Ashanti region on Friday.

The exercise which is expected to cover over 400 markets in the region forms part of government’s commitment to curb the spread of the covid-19 pandemic which has been reported to be on the increase.

The Ashanti regional exercise started at the Agogo Community Market at Atonsu in Kumasi. All aspects of the markets – shops, sheds, kiosks, streets, among others were disinfected.

Regional Manager of Zoomlion in the Ashanti Region, Philip Yeboah Asante, told the media that the surge in the covid-19 has necessitated the 3rd phase of the excercise to help contain and curb the spread of the virus.

He said though the disinfection exercise would not entirely wipe out the virus from the system, it would help reduce the rate of infection and spread.

“Covid numbers are increasing again so we need to start the 3rd one to curb the rise. This is disinfection against bacteria, viruses and small insects,” he emphasized.

According to him, the 3rd phase of the disinfection excercise is display of the government’s commitment to fight the pandemic hence the need for the municipal Assembly to also assist in that regard.

“We are supporting the zoomlion company with whatever assistance they need to make the exercise a success,” he said.

He commended the market women for complying with the process even though on a short notice.

“My advice is that everybody should wear their mask and the social distancing. Unfortunately people have relaxed on the protocols. I think if we are able to observe these protocols this virus can vanish” the MCE stated.
