The National Identification Authority has been hit by what can be described as mass deaths as seven registration officials have died in a period of between one and two months in the various districts in which they were deployed to work in the ongoing mass registration exercise.
According to deep throat sources the incident started during the deployment to Bono, Ahafo, Bono East and the two Upper regions when officials were registering applicants in November and December 2019.
Sources that confirmed the deaths to AJNewsonline.com attributed the death of the officials to malaria, typhoid, bad eating habits and poor sanitation.
Some of the causes of the untimely demise of the six individuals they said were exposure to mosquitoes, poor drinking water, and bathing of unclean water which most villages used to prepare the foods they buy.
They told AJNews that places, where some of them sleep in their various districts, are nothing to write home about as some of them have to compete with snakes, scorpions and other harmful predators for sleeping places.
The dead consist of six Mobile Registration Workstation Operators, MRWO’s and one Commissioner for Oaths. Out of the Six deceased are two females.
Adolf Adjei stationed in the Pru-West District,Yeji died on the 25th of November, 2019 at the Marthia Hospital; Raphael Pinto, an MRW Operator. was stationed at Bolgatanga-East. He was involved in a motor accident on the 4th of December 2019 and did not survive.
Stephen Owusu Amponsah an MRW operator who was also stationed at D/A Primary School, Nkwabirim, Sekyere Central, Nsuta of the Sekyere Central District took ill and was rushed to the Nsuta Polyclinic but was transferred to the Mampong Government Hospital, where he died on the 21st of December 2019.
Alice dziezorm Agordoh stationed at Ejisu in the Ashanti Region reportedly died on 23 December 2019 in a bus on her way back to Accra after she had been admitted at the Ejisu Government Hospital for some days, treated of malaria and was discharged.
She decided to go to her family in Accra to seek further treatment and was found dead in the bus upon arrival.
Another 26-year-old MRWO Roseline Selorm Klu also died mysteriously in her line of duty.
The rest are MRW Operator Frederick Nyantekyi who unfortunately lost his life in similar situation.
Just when the year was about to end on the 31st of December, another MRWO, Victor was reported dead at Okomfo Anokye Hospital after he was rushed to the center.
The National Identification Authority started the mass registration of Ghanaians in on 29th April, 2019 in Accra and has finished with eleven out of the sixteen regions of Ghana. Namely Greater Accra, Volta Region, Oti Region, Northern, North East and Savannah regions.
The rest are Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, Upper East and the Upper West Regions and is currently registering Ghanaians in the Ashanti Region which commenced on the 11th of December and is supposed to end on 10th January, 2020.
The target of the Authority is to register eighty percent of Ghanaians by end of the mass registration exercise.
The Authority plans to register 2.9million Ghanaians in the Ashanti Region by the end of the exercise in the most densely populated Region in Ghana.
The next regions after the Ashanti region will be Eastern, Central, Western and the Western North Regions which will be done simultaneously.
