Mayor Sowah Engages Leaders Of Nzema Oil Traders Association Over Redevelopment Plan

The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah has engaged the leadership of the Nzema Oil Traders Association in Agbogbloshie over the redevelopment of a parcel of land being used by the traders for their activities.

The engagement follows plans by the government to redevelop and provide social amenities for residents of Agbogbloshie.
The MCE explained that as part of plans to redevelop the parcel of land occupied by Nzema Oil traders Association the area had been earmarked for the development of a hostel facility for Kayayei hence the need to engage leaders of the Association to inform them of the relocation plan.

He assured that, the work would be completed in a year after its commencement and that the redevelopment would not affect traders but the trucks adding that temporal parking and loading bays would be provided for such purpose. ” Government wants to redevelop the market in its entirety, it is for your own good, it’s a win-win situation for all of us, you will face temporal challenges when the project commences which is normal but in the long run it will be beneficial to all, ” he said.

Chairman of Nzema Oil traders Association, Mr. Sammuel Akya, thanked the Mayor for his visit and assured him of their maximum support to develop the area. ” What is happening is not a decision from the Mayor but from government and it is for the redevelopment of the market, this is simple and short. I was misinformed and that led to the misunderstanding between us. It’s now clear that you are not removing the station permanently but to redevelop the place in its entirety, ” he said.

The Agbogbloshie enclave houses a lot of commercial activities and it is the main point for bulk goods traders such as foodstuffs among others.
