Menstrual Hygiene Day: KAYA Women Leadership Institute’s Founder emphasizes the Importance of Menstrual Hygiene Education

The Founder of KAYA Women’s Leadership Institute Mrs. Kosi Yankey-Ayeh, has underscored the paramount importance of earnestly engaging in tailored discussions in schools to ensure the safety and well-being of young girls during their menstrual cycles.

In admonishing female students at Kotobabi Cluster of Schools and St. Kizito RC Basic School, all in Accra, Mrs. Yankey-Ayeh urged the young female participants to always adhere to all measures promoting menstrual hygiene to safeguard their health.

Female students from the two public schools in Accra have benefitted from philanthropic gestures from the KAYA Women’s Leadership Institute, a non-governmental organization, as it marks the Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 31, 2024.

Highlighting the initiative’s purpose, Mrs. Kosi Yankey-Ayeh said it was to provide educational sessions on menstrual hygiene; sanitary pads, period journals, tissues, hand sanitizers, and notebooks to the young ladies in attendance.

The institute also ensured that health experts led all educational sessions to ensure that the right information was being delivered with professional counseling for those who hitherto may have had some misconceptions about menstrual cycles and stigmatization. It also covered various topics related to menstrual hygiene, including the importance of proper sanitation, and access to appropriate products.

Mrs. Yankey-Ayeh noted that the endeavor complements the institute’s ongoing efforts to empower future generations globally while aiming to raise awareness and promote healthy practices among young girls during their menstrual cycles.

She expressed confidence in the institute’s project and believes it will significantly contribute to raising awareness about menstrual hygiene and promoting safe hygiene practices among young girls during their menstrual cycles.

Mrs. Yankey-Ayeh also believes that by addressing the stigma and cultural taboos surrounding menstruation, “we can foster a more inclusive society that celebrates the natural processes of the female body”.
