Ministry of Food and Agriculture Quadruples Ghana’s Warehouse Storage Capacity

On Monday May 10, 2021, the Minister for Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, chaired the closing session of the International Conference on the West African Food Security Storage System which was hosted in Accra from April 28, 2021.

The conference, which was largely held via the zoom platform and with all Ministers of Agriculture of the 15-Member ECOWAS states in attendance, discussed, among others, the challenges confronting Food security and storage in the West African sub-region.

Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto used the occasion to throw more light on the infrastructural and the institutional reforms that have taken place since 2017 in addressing the myriad of challenges that had bedeviled the country under the previous administration.

Among other initiatives, he said the Government has since 2017 increased the capacity of the warehouse storage system from 38,000 metric tons to about 120,000 metric tons with the construction of additional 81,000 metric tons capacity warehouses across the country.

Dr. Afriyie Akoto also highlighted the successes chalked under the Planting for Food and Jobs programme and how Ghana as a country is playing leadership roles in addressing food security, in terms of becoming the bread basket in the West African sub-region.
