Mireku Duker rewards teachers in his constituency

Member of Parliament for Tarkwa Nsuaem Constituency George Mireku Duker has instituted a Teacher’s Award Scheme to motivate teachers in his constituency to continue with their tireless and selfless dedication in the provision of quality education despite the daunting challenges they encounter every day.

The MP indicated that the Awards Scheme is motivated by the outstanding sacrifices teachers in his constituency have to make each day, stressing: “I am personally aware of the various challenges faced by our teachers and I believe that the institution of this award scheme will boost their morale, enhance their output and in the end enrich education in the Municipality.”

George Mireku Duker, who is a former teacher himself, noted that matters relating to education have been his topmost foresight as a Member of Parliament and that his priority is to change the education narrative in Tarkwa Nsuaem.

Since becoming the MP, George Mireku Duker has engaged the various stakeholders of education in the Tarkwa Nsuaem municipality at the least opportunity where he has become abreast with the challenges associated with the delivery of quality education.

To help address the numerous challenges, the MP has facilitated over 800 scholarships and donated several teaching and learning materials to schools, teachers, students as well as the education directorate.

“We have presented motorcycles to some school improvement support officers (siso), desktop computers, printer and projector to the Municipal Education Directorate, 250 furniture set to Ghana Education Service, furniture set to Dompim SDA School, over 6,000 mathematical sets to BECE candidates, computers to Ideal College and Royal Mends Schools and building materials towards the completion of New Techiman Basic School among many other infrastructure developments.

“We have also collaborated with government through strategic lobbying to provide a 6-Unit Classroom Block at TARSCO, a 6-Unit Classroom Block with Toilet and Urinal Facilities at Domeabra, 6-Unit Classroom Block with Staff Room, Air-conditioned, ICT Lab for Nsuaem Methodist M/A Basic School, 6-Unit Classroom Block with Toilet and Urinal Facilities at Dadwen, 2-Unit KG Classroom Block at Benso-Essamang, 6 -Unit Classroom Block at Benso SHS, 6 -Unit Classroom Block at Nyaso, 6-Unit Classroom Block for Esuoso Anglican School; 3,000 Capacity Dining Hall for FIASEC, 300-Bed Girls’ Dormitory for TARSCO, 3 Unit Classroom Block for Simpa, Newly Completed GNPC School of Petroleum, UMaT, Newly Completed MDF Administration Block, UMaT and Payment of School Fees for some Constituents.”

According to him, “it is not surprising that, the 2021 District League Table (DLT) as produced by United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), National Development Planning Committee (NDPC) and Center for Democratic Development-Ghana (CDD-Ghana) placed Tarkwa-Nsuaem as part of top 7 MMDAs in the country and the well-endowed local assemblies in terms of access to Education, Health, Water, Sanitation and other development variables. UMaT’s back-to-back winning of the Gas Challenge has proved how the various infrastructural projects by the government has lifted the image of the University”.

Speaking at the maiden edition of the Awards Scheme at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), the MP added that the awards scheme is to help sustain the gains Tarkwa Nsuaem has made in the provision of education.

“As we celebrate the Teachers’ Awards, we will soon, by the middle of the year, outdoor a new mechanism called THE TARKWA-NSUAEM TEACHERS’ FUND that could among others sustain this scheme. The purpose of establishing such a fund is to help address genuine pressing needs of teachers in the municipality. In the course of the year, the board of trustees and all modalities of the fund will be established during the launching.”

A pupil’s teacher at the Ningo Primary School emerged the best teacher and was awarded a brand new $18,000 Kia Pegas car for his selflessness.

“This is proof of the fact that hard work pays. I kept working without thinking of any award. My only motivation was to ensure that any student who passes through my hands gets the best of everything. The MP has earned my praise. I applaud him for having the foresight to help teachers. This award will only encourage me to do double what I was already doing,” Shedrack Obeng said.
