Mobile phone technician accuses police of extortion

A Mobile phone technician is accusing a group of police officers of allegedly extorting an amount of six hundred and fifty Ghana cedis GHC 650.00 from him.

Narrating his ordeal to Ghananewsonline.com.gh, the victim who pleaded to remain anonymous said in the night of July 9, he and his friends were having a drink at a popular drinking spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle after a had day’s work when the group of policemen on patrol duty invaded the spot and accused them of smoking “weed.”

He said the police officers demanded that they accompanied them to the nearest police station after arresting and handcuffing some of the young men for unruly behavior.

According to the victim, the police marched them into their patrol vehicle and drove them around town and demanded from them various sums of money to let them off.

He said he protested his arrest, but he was asked to pay an amount of one thousand Ghana Cedis GHC 1000.00 to be set free.

He said he pleaded with the police but they would have none of that and began to search through his pockets for money.

Finding two hundred and fifty cedis in his pocket, the officers asked him to call someone to transfer the balance of their demand to his phone.

Sensing danger, the victim said he called a friend who managed to send him four hundred cedis which one of the officers tried to transfer into his MoMo wallet but was unsuccessful.

Another officer then tried and successfully transferred the four hundred Cedis into his wallet.

He said after taking the money from him, the officers drove him around town and dropped him in the middle of nowhere at around 2:00am, gave him some money to transport himself home and drove off.

He added that he managed to find his way home in the morning not knowing the fate of his other friends.

The victim said he later retrieved the names on the MoMo wallet the officers made an attempt to transfer the money into and the second wallet into which the money was finally transferred into.

He gave the names on the wallets as one Emmanuel Tawiah Boison – 0243543468 and Solomon Amanor Donkor – 0270660011.

The victim is therefore passionately appealing to the police hierarchy to investigate this unfortunate incident to bring the alleged perpetrators to book.

He is willing to assist the police authority to get to the bottom of this matter.
