‘More loans’ as MPs reconvene for urgent parliamentary business
“In exercise of the power conferred on the Speaker by order 42(3) of the Standing Orders of the Parliament of Ghana, I, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, do hereby direct that Parliament shall, notwithstanding anything to the contrary, be recalled from recess to sit on Tuesday, the 2nd day of May 2023, at ten o’clock in the forenoon, at Parliament House, Accra, to consider urgent parliamentary business,”
Ghana’s legislators have begun converging in the chamber of parliament after Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin recalled them for an “urgent parliamentary business.”
In a communication dated April 20, 2023, the MPs were recalled for the emergency sitting slated for today, Tuesday, May 2, 2023, to enable them to consider some loan agreements.
“In exercise of the power conferred on the Speaker by order 42(3) of the Standing Orders of the Parliament of Ghana, I, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, do hereby direct that Parliament shall, notwithstanding anything to the contrary, be recalled from recess to sit on Tuesday, the 2nd day of May 2023, at ten o’clock in the forenoon, at Parliament House, Accra, to consider urgent parliamentary business,” portions of the statement recalling the MPs read.
Deep-throat sources have confirmed to News Alert Gh that the recall is to compel them to give government clearance to go for some five loans.
The Minority is, however, questioning the essence of the loans when the country is reeling under an economic crisis mainly attributed to the unbridled spending of the Akufo-Addo-led government.
The loans are said to be crucial as the country’s financial situation remains dire, with its international reserves fast dwindling by the day.
A $3 billion IMF economic bailout deal which was expected to be clinched in March 2023 to help steer the economy out of the woods, appears to be dragging on as Ghanaian officials are yet to receive the needed debt forgiveness assurances from China and the Paris Club.
