MP for Akim Oda to launch Road Safety Campaign

The newly elected Honorable Member of Parliament (MP) for the Akim Oda Constituency in the Eastern Region, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, who recently survived a terrible motor accident has told journalists that he has learnt a lot from the experience to enable him commit resources into a road safety campaign he intends to launch.

The lawmaker escaped death by the teeth when his 4×4 pick up vehicle was crushed by a commercial vehicle. The minibus is said to have veered off its lane and rammed into his vehicle at a Junction called Asuoyaa Bridge.

The accident which occurred on the evening of Monday, February 1, 2021 while on his way to Accra from Koforidua has caused severe damages to his personal vehicle though there no casualties. He said the experience has taught him a lot and he is going to take advantage of that to educate the public to be cautious on the road always.

Though the damage to his personal body was minor, there were rumors that the MP had slided into coma and was taking too long to revive. But in an interview with ghananewsonline.com.gh in Parliament on Friday, Hon Akwasi Acquah said he was treated and discharged the same day and has since been reporting in Parliament for business.

He has assured his constituents that he is active and well and is ready to continue working to serve their interests.

“I’m standing in front of you now so it’s not true that I have been in coma” he told journalists.

He admitted that the accident has been a real eye opener for him about the carelessness of our drivers on the road, as such he is preparing to put together a statement on road safety for delivering on the floor of Parliament to Kickstart his personal road safety education campaign.

“I’m going to start my road safety educational campaign by bringing road safety issues to the attention of the August House in a form of statement,” he stated.

Adding that “I am going to be an advocate and Ambassador to champion issues of road safety at all levels”.

He is of the strong view that it is time issues of road safety are brought to the fore of policy makers to enable it formulate good policies to address them.
