Member of Parliament for Ellembele, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah on Friday launched a food bank project in his constituency to help provide food for the less privileged.
The project, which is the brain child of the former Energy and Petroleum minister, will receive support in the form of donations from benevolent citizens to be able to feed the elderly, sick and the vulnerable in the area.
In an interview with Power News, Mr Buah noted that his aim was to support the poor in the area since hunger was pervasive in most of the communities in his constituency.
“This is my way of helping my people. Research has shown that about 1.5 million Ghanaians go to bed hungry, so I had to initiate this project to deal with the hunger in these communities,” the MP emphasized after the launch.
He said the food bank, which will receive hot meals and processed foods, is a non partisan project which will be managed by the clergy and other health officials woukd see to the wholesomeness of the food.
“This project is non discriminatory and non partisan that’s why we have entrusted it into the hands of our chiefs, pastors and Muslim clerics. We also have nutritionists who will see to it that the foods donated will meet a certain standard and good for consumption,” Mr Buah said.
Asked how the project will be sustained, the philanthropist hastened that apart from the donations expected from the citizens, he will periodically donate to the managers of the bank to ensure that food is always available for the needy in the district.
“Some food banks in some parts of the world have been sustained for long. Some have lasted 100 years, so we will do our best to sustain it,” he assured.
The food bank which is a van will move from one community to the other in the area to distribute hot meals and other food items to the vulnerable in the constituency.
