As part of her social intervention policies for community, the Member of Parliament for Krachi West, Helen Adjoa Ntoso has provided mechanised boreholes for two communities in the constituency.
Residents and domestic animals of Ehiamankyene-Chorkosi and Bunda communities within the Krachi West constituency of the Oti Region, have been competing for water over years.
The commissioning of the two mechanised Boreholes funded by the MP has brought a sigh of relief to the people who suffered decades of acute water shortage.
Access to drinking Water, per the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #6 is not only a basic necessity but a fundamental human rights.
Sustainable Development Goal 6 is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015. It calls for clean water and sanitation for all people.
But access to potable drinking water in these communities have been a perennial challenged. Until the intervention of Helen Ntoso, residents traveled long distances in order to find water.
She told The Republic that the boreholes were drilled as part of her social intervention policies to reduce the acute water challenges as women and children of these communities have had to walk between 20 to 30 kilometres to fetch water.
“During my earlier fact- finding visits to the two communities, it came to light that access to safe drinking water was one of the basic essential utilities they lacked hence the need to provide them with mechanized boreholes.
“The commissioning of these water projects formed part of my numerous initiatives geared towards improving the standards of living of my constituents in these trying times,” the MP stated.
While assuring of her commitment to bring more development projects to improve their standard of living, the MP urged residents of the beneficiary communities to take good care of the mechanized boreholes to prolong their lifespan.
She added that she had outlined provision of portable drinking water as one of her social intervention policies and would extend same to other communities that are in dire need of water
She also encouraged the constituents to adhere strictly to the World Health Organisation (WHO) precautionary measures and protocols of regular hand washing under running water with soap, use of sanitizer, wearing of face mask and observance of social distancing to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
Traditional Chief of Bunda, Torgbi Wayo Dordor, expressed his appreciation to the MP for the gesture, adding that the borehole would go a long way to help reduce the challenges they go through in accessing drinking water at long distances.
